Israeli Troops Seize Strategic Castle in South Lebanon
In a statement, the IDF said ground forces advanced into the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi Saluki regions, areas considered key terrain in southern Lebanon.
Israeli media reported that the military had secured the ridge, including the historic castle located at its highest point. The outlets described the move as Israel’s deepest military advance into Lebanon in 26 years and published an image showing an Israeli flag raised over the ancient fortress.
According to the IDF, the operation is intended to dismantle Hezbollah military capabilities and eliminate militants, which it said pose immediate threats to Israeli communities in the Galilee Panhandle and the northern border town of Metula.
The military said the offensive, which involves significant ground deployments, forms part of broader efforts to reinforce Israeli operational control across parts of southern Lebanon.
The IDF alleged that Hezbollah had used the ridge as a command point for coordinating attacks against Israel and said Israeli forces were targeting launch infrastructure located in the area.
Ahead of the ground assault, the Israeli air force carried out large-scale strikes against Hezbollah positions, supported by artillery bombardments and tank fire.
Israeli troops then moved to secure strategic locations, demolish military infrastructure in the Litani River region, and carry out engineering operations linked to the mission.
In a separate statement, the IDF said an Israeli soldier was killed on Saturday night after an explosive drone launched by Hezbollah hit Israeli forces operating west of the Beaufort area in southern Lebanon.
