Israel Announces Suspension of Classes Near Lebanon Border

(MENAFN) Israel's military ordered sweeping civilian restrictions Saturday along its northern border, suspending school activities and shuttering beaches as fighting with Hezbollah intensifies and ground forces push deeper into Lebanese territory.

The directives, issued following a security assessment of conditions along the northern frontier, require residents in communities bordering Lebanon to stay near shelters throughout Sunday and Monday, limit public gatherings, and comply with beach closures in affected zones.

Schools in the Upper Galilee and the occupied Golan Heights may continue operating only within structures offering immediate access to protected areas, the military specified.

The announcement coincided with Hebrew-language media reports that the Israeli military is erecting bridges over the Litani River to support expanded ground operations — a move confirmed, at least in part, by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stated Friday that troops had crossed the river and advanced to what he described as "positions of control."

A senior Lebanese military source told Turkish media on Saturday that Israeli forces had penetrated villages and towns north of the Litani, including Zawtar al-Sharqiya and Shaqif Arnoun, and were closing in on the outskirts of Nabatieh.

Hezbollah broadened its strikes against northern Israel on Saturday, framing the attacks as retaliation for what it characterized as ongoing Israeli violations of a ceasefire agreement that came into force on April 17 and has since been extended through early July.

The broader conflict, which Israel escalated into a large-scale military campaign on March 2, has — according to official Lebanese figures — killed 3,371 people and wounded 10,129. Lebanese authorities report that more than one million people have been displaced since hostilities intensified.
