Israel Debates Netanyahu’s Role as Trump Takes Lead in Truce Announcements

(MENAFN) A political debate has intensified in Israel over whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to independently steer national security policy or whether his role has become increasingly overshadowed by US President Donald Trump, who has recently been at the forefront of announcing ceasefire deals involving Israel.

Trump declared a Gaza ceasefire on Oct. 10, 2025, and has since issued multiple statements regarding truce arrangements linked to developments in Iran and Lebanon. These announcements have fueled discussion inside Israel about where real decision-making authority lies when it comes to regional security matters.

Despite the growing debate, officials within Netanyahu’s government have dismissed claims that he is acting under Trump’s direction. Among them, Sports Minister Miki Zohar of the Likud party said in remarks to Israeli broadcaster that Netanyahu remains fully in control of decisions.

“Even if he agrees with Trump’s position, he does so only because it serves Israel’s interests,” Zohar said.
